Nordea recognized as top-notch M&A adviser

January 2010The magazine Acquisitions Monthly, published by Thomson Reuters, has named Nordea Nordic region Mergers & Acquisitions adviser of the year 2009.

The award was presented to representatives from Nordea Markets at a ceremony in London on Tuesday 19 January 2010. The winning argument for awarding Nordea the title is that Nordea Markets executed and completed the merger of Post Danmark and the Swedish equivalent Posten, creating one of the largest infrastructure companies in the region.

- Winning the award as Nordic region M&A adviser of the year 2009 is an acknowledgement of our investment banking activities. The fact that Nordea Markets has been at the helm of winning and completing such a large cross-border M&A transaction shows that we have the capacity and skill to work on even the most sizeable and complex Nordic transactions, explains Christian Hyldahl, head of Investment Banking and co-head of Nordea Markets together with Mads Jakobsen.

- The award shows that Nordea Markets is well on its way to become a leading Nordic investment bank. However, since the M&A market was subdued and showed very low activity in 2009, Nordea Markets must complete at least a handful of such large deals in the Nordic region in a year with more normal market conditions in order to truly become one of the leading investment banks. With this award we have positioned ourselves well for the expected growth in the M&A market in the coming years, concludes Christian Hyldahl.

The merger between Post Danmark and Posten has by far been the largest M&A transaction by all comparisons in Denmark and one of the very largest in Northern Europe in 2009. Nordea Markets advised Post Danmark on the transaction.

The merger

The merger was announced on 1 April 2008 and completed on 24 June 2009. The merged group will have an annual revenue of approx. SEK 45bn (EUR 4.1bn) and more than 50,000 employees. The merger thereby created one of the largest and most essential companies in the Nordic region securing a central part of the region’s infrastructure.

The award

Each year Thomson Reuters encourages investment banks worldwide to make submissions for the annual Acquisitions Monthly Awards for mergers and acquisitions (M&A) work undertaken during the year.

The decision to award Nordea as Nordic region M&A adviser of the year 2009 was influenced primarily by our own submission/pitch, the magazine's own research and meetings and the views of external judges.
