Nordea has today published its Sustainability Report for 2015, showing the sustainability progress made during 2015. The report introduces a new sustainability strategy.

Kristiina Oja, acting head of Sustainability, says that the new strategy is an important statement of intent for the bank:

- For many years we have worked with taking responsibility for social and environmental issues in our business but we want to do more. As the biggest financial institution in the Nordics we have an important role to play as enablers of economic success in society. We have concluded that our sustainability programme should address the societal challenges where we have the relevant skills and expertise.

The three key focus areas for our new sustainability ambitions are: promoting sustainable economic progress, building skills in personal finance and ensuring a diverse workforce. Committing to actions that drive forward our new sustainability strategy is a priority for Nordea.

Progress in 2015

The new strategy and the bank’s progress in 2015 are presented in Nordea’s eighth annual Sustainability Report. Highlights from 2015 include:

  • We have strengthened our compliance culture and stepped up our efforts to combat financial crime.
  • We aspire to have a positive impact on the community and environment. By actively engaging with the companies we invest in, the customers we finance and the suppliers we purchase from, we take responsibility for our business decisions.
  • We committed to being a carbon-neutral company by offsetting our own operational emissions, which we also achieved by the end of 2015.
  • Nordea employees made a difference by sharing expertise and teaching financial skills throughout the Nordics. During the year we volunteered for over 5,200 hours and have an ambition to contribute more in 2016.
  • We continued our efforts to increase the number of female managers.

The Sustainability Report, a detailed Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) index and Fact Book are now available for downloading on nordea.com.
