Slush, the biggest startup event in the Nordics, was turned into a completely virtual event this year in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. For Nordea, this brought new opportunities for matching startups with investors.

Nordea’s virtual speed dating concept proved to be a great success in the Slush 2020 event, and brought in dozens of large international venture capital (VC) investors. According to Vesa Riihimäki from Nordea’s Startup&Growth Unit, it would not have been possible on this scale in a more traditional physical event.

“Our speed dating concept was taken to a whole new level with the virtual solution. Even though Slush is renowned all over the world, the world’s largest VC investors are also the busiest and can’t be everywhere. By giving them now a chance to attend virtually, six out of the ten of most active VC investors came to our events,” Vesa Riihimäki highlights.

Over 300 meetings between startups and investors

Altogether, Nordea arranged over 300 meetings between startups and investors and the feedback from all parties has been very positive - the most popular startup had dates with ten different investors. In fact, the event’s organisers at Slush found Nordea’s virtual concept so good they decided to hold their own investor match making event.

”We can help startups create contacts that would be more difficult to find on their own, and correspondingly we are making the investors’ life easier by bringing them together with relevant investment targets,” Vesa Riihimäki confirms.

There will be more to tell during 2021, as the investor speed dating activity is set to continue in the spring.
