Sustainable banking

Enabling sustainable choices

For 200 years, Nordea has supported society through periods of change. Together we have lived through wars, recessions and, more recently, a global pandemic. We’ve also lived together through periods of economic growth, leading to a quality of life that our grandparents could only dream of.

Society is now facing the next great shift, to sustainability. The world needs to build a new low-carbon economy, with a just transition that creates jobs and fosters diversity, inclusion and equal opportunities across society. Customer needs and expectations are changing, investors are looking for more resilient opportunities and regulators across the globe are moving decisively. Banks will play a vital role in this transition by chanelling investments and financing companies, guiding them towards sustainable pathways and business models.

As a leading Nordic bank, with approximately 9 million customers and deeply rooted values, we recognise that we have a key role in helping our customers and society shift to a sustainable future. With our long and solid experience will play a leading role through active ownership in our investments and by engaging with our customers to help them accelerate their own transition through our support and offerings.

Our vision is to be a strong and personal financial partner. That’s why we are committing to a net-zero emissions target across our lending and investment portfolios, and internal operations, by 2050 at the latest. Backed by our strong financial position and commercial solutions, we believe it’s the only right thing to do, now and over the long term, for our customers, society and our business. We say what we do, and we do what we say.

During recent years, we have accelerated our ambition by taking ownership and a leading role in creating new global frameworks, which will guide the financial sector and its customers. We continue to seek opportunities to engage and collaborate with others to do more. We want to create new value for the customers we serve, for the companies we invest in and for society as we accelerate the shift to a sustainable future. In line with our purpose ‘Together we lead the way, enabling dreams and everyday aspirations for a greater good.

Supply chain

Nordea’s Supplier Code of Conduct (SCoC) is mandatory for all our contracted suppliers. It requires the supplier to adhere to the core principles of the UN Global Compact within the areas of human rights, labour standards, environment and anti-corruption. Suppliers are obliged to convey Nordea’s SCoC or similar principles onto their sub-suppliers.
