In tough competition with hundreds of experts across Europe, Nordea and Aila Aho have been selected to one of the 35 honourable seats in the European Commission’s technical expert group on sustainable finance.
The European Union has a strong focus on the transition to a sustainable, low-carbon economy and has been at the forefront of efforts to build a financial system that supports sustainable growth. 35 experts representing civil society, academia, the business and finance sector have been selected as members or observers to the group as a way to involve society in shaping the Commission’s proposals.
”This is an acknowledgement of Nordea as a leader in Sustainable Finance and of course specifically an acknowledgement of Aila’s excellent qualifications and good name in this field. Being a part of expert groups like this one is truly an example of how Nordea together with partners and customers enables the transition towards a sustainable future”, says Casper von Koskull.
“I’m very pleased and honoured to represent Nordea, the Nordic area and banks in general in this working group. I think it’s fantastic that the financing community is taking real steps in integrating sustainability in the product offering and strategic thinking. These legislative proposals have the potential to take us towards a more sustainable financing landscape and facilitate the transition towards a low-carbon future”, says Aila Aho.
Nordea is one of three banks represented in the expert working group, which highlights the Nordic banks’ and economies’ strong commitment to sustainability. The Nordic market has the highest share of green bonds issued relative to the total market and Aila Aho will use her Nordic expertise in the sub- working group developing the EU green bond standards. “I believe EU level standards will further strengthen and facilitate growth in the green bond market”, adds Aho.
Aila Aho has wide experience in banking and capital markets with a good understanding of the drivers for the real economy investments. During her long career she has been a director in capital markets, Global Head of Export and Project Finance in Nordea and a Client executive for the largest corporates and institutions. She created the Sustainable Finance team in Nordea Wholesale banking and started a systematic ESG evaluation of the largest corporates. Aila also has an academic post-graduate Certificate in Sustainable Business from Cambridge University, which has given her a solid foundation for her current role as executive sustainability adviser in Wholesale banking and her future work in the EU Expert Group on sustainable finance.
