Danish startup EIVEE on investor speed dating with Nordea

Christopher Thorsell, Head of Strategy & Partnerships at EIVEE, attended Investor Speed Dating Event organised by Nordea Startup & Growth. We asked him why the company decided to go and what they learned.
Nordea Investor speed-dating at Slush 2021

Hi Christopher, thanks for taking the time to talk to us. You recently attended Nordea’s investor speed dating, representing the Danish startup EIVEE. Could you tell us a bit about what your company does?

"We provide carbon accounting solutions: we help companies reduce their carbon footprint by calculating their entire scope 1, 2 and 3 greenhouse gas emissions – comprehensively, with a high degree of accuracy and on a continuous basis.

How did you find out about the event?

"Through a LinkedIn post. For a startup like us, it's good to be close to banks: they have a huge network and can assist with many different things. Nordea has a dedicated focus on startups, which is great. This event was perfect timing, as we were keen to meet new investors and get feedback on our journey ahead."

What made Nordea Investor Speed Dating stand out?

"The VC market is huge, fragmented, and difficult to navigate. This event was therefore a great way to get in contact with new potential investors. The best thing about Nordea’s speed dates is that that it changes the arena as the investors are the ones deciding which companies are the right fit for them and who they would like to meet. Normally, they’d be only listening to the startup pitching; here, they’re more prepared and more willing to ask questions. The initial interest on the investor side is already in place."

How did you benefit from the experience?

"We had some really great meetings with investors – eight in all – and got a lot of good input. We’re still in dialogue with many of them."

"It was also valuable to get a feeling for the capital market and venture capitalists’ view on the carbon accounting market, which EIVEE is positioned in. It is also good to keep in mind that investors are well connected and willing to help, so if they are not the right match, many of them can help with connection to other VCs.”

Be crisp and clear on where you are heading and know what you want to get out of the meetings.

Any advice for other companies who are thinking of applying?

"If it makes sense and the timing is good with respect to your fundraising, definitely apply. Come prepared and don’t rush it – these events come several times a year. Be crisp and clear on where you are heading and know what you want to get out of the meetings. The meetings are really short, so it’s essential to plan which questions you want to get answers to and what you’d like to get feedback on."

"The investors in these events are really experienced. They’re also from all over the world, so it’s a great opportunity to get connected and open some doors that might be difficult to open elsewhere. Fundraising is all about relationships and you never know who will be your next partner on your journey."
