Fields such as engineering, maths and data science are in high demand at Nordea

Meet Dušana Milinković, a 23-year-old graduate based in Copenhagen. Dušana graduated from DTU, with MSc in Mathematical Modelling and Computation and here in Nordea she is working on machine learning and AI projects. She joined the Nordea Graduate Programme in September 2024, with Rates Development and Data being her home unit.

Why did you choose to apply to the Nordea Graduate Programme?

It all started with my university thesis, which I did in cooperation with an FX trading team in Markets. Together with my course mate from university, we did a project in the machine learning sphere. All the people in the team were very interested in the project and its outcome. However, what I found the most important is the way they guided us through the project. I was surrounded by highly knowledgeable and experienced people who were also welcoming and supportive. During this project, I felt a perfect balance between ownership of the project on the one hand, and guidance and help from the team on the other. Our brainstorming sessions were very productive, and I enjoyed the dynamics and the progress we made together. After this experience, I was sure that I wanted to kickstart my career at Nordea. Here, I have the opportunity to work in areas I am very curious about, while both contributing to the team and learning a lot from the people around me.

In the beginning of October you attended the Nordea Graduate Summit in Helsinki, could you tell us more about that?

The summit was a three-day event full of engaging activities – workshops, exercises, networking and social activities. We broadened our knowledge about Nordea as a bank, workplace and its different areas. I particularly appreciated the possibility to meet fellow graduates from all four countries.  Meeting so many people working in teams and business areas different from your own is a great way to learn about the different areas of the bank. The event was very well-designed and organised, and the speakers were truly engaging. I returned to my desk the following week very motivated to learn, improve and do more.

What would be your advice for others that would like to start as a graduate in Nordea?

As graduates, we have the opportunity to meet many professionals, learn from them, connect and get inspired. I also find it very important that we are able to explore beyond the scope of our own work. Although many of the aspects of the programme are already organised for us, I still think you get the most out of it when you actively participate, ask questions, initiate conversations, networks and your own learning path.

Do you have any fun fact or word of wisdom you would like to share?

Coming from a technical background, it seems logical to me that the banking industry offers plenty of opportunities for people with a background like mine. However, not everyone sees that connection right away and I would like to spread the word about these possibilities. Fields such as engineering, maths and data science are in high demand at Nordea, as there is so much data to explore, build the models on top of and draw valuable conclusions that are crucial for making business decisions.
