My time in New York has been a great experience all round

Based in Copenhagen, Amalie Ernstsen, who is an economics graduate from the University of Copenhagen, joined Nordea in January 2023 as an analyst in LC&I Denmark. She has just returned from working six months as part of the Corporate Banking team at the Nordea New York branch.

Hi Amalie – you’ve just returned after a six-month rotation in Nordea’s New York branch. How was it?

My time in New York was a great experience all round. I feel very lucky to have been given the opportunity to live and work in such a dynamic and wonderful city. During my six-month stay, I got to work in an international environment with friendly and encouraging colleges while having spare time to experience the city’s vibrant neighbourhoods.

What was your typical day like?

Due to the time difference between New York and the Nordics, our working day often started with discussions with our colleagues in the Nordic countries about relevant corporate customers. This covered credit processes, business strategies, sales pitches, pricing, loan documentation and more.

After that, we prepared presentations, credit reviews, proposals, calculations, data and process optimisation and worked on ad hoc requests from customers. We coordinated customer activities and worked together with various stakeholders at Nordea on customer cases, to maximise business potential and ensure the best customer experience.

After work, I would typically go out with friends and colleagues, sampling everything New York had to offer – from bars and restaurants to theatres, concerts, jazz clubs, museums and galleries to name just a few.

What was the most important thing you learned?

At the Nordea New York branch , I got to observe corporate banking from another angle and became familiar with new challenges and techniques. I gained an understanding of the products and services Nordea offers at the New York branch and how Nordic companies operate in North America.

Furthermore, I’ve enjoyed participating in various activities at and outside of work, and attended cultural activities in the city. From the plethora of food options and sports events to pop-up concerts and jazz clubs, the city is a true cultural melting pot with endless opportunities.

What are you up to now?

I have returned to LC&I Denmark as client associate, covering a portfolio of strategically important Danish corporate customers.

Do you have any fun fact or words of wisdom you’d like to share?

I you ever visit New York, watch out for Citi Bikes and never wait for a green light at a crossing if you don’t want to look like a tourist!
