Nordea’s Talent Accelerator Programme builds both competence and resilience

24-10-2024 12:44

As a Nordic bank with a central role in society, Nordea is all about making tomorrow a little better than today. That is the Nordic idea that we are built upon. This idea of something better means that we continuously need to learn and develop. Come join us on that journey and learn more about our Talent Accelerator Programme that builds both competence and resilience of our employees in Nordea’s legal function.

Raised in Rovaniemi in Finland, Beshta Nuri is one of the 13 participants of the Nordea’s Talent Accelerator Programme. She is a graduate from Queen Mary University of London and has worked for Nordea in different roles since 2019. Currently she works mainly with legal issues related to financial crime prevention and data privacy.

Mikaela Merilä is also taking part in the programme. She is a graduate from Uppsala University and started at Nordea in 2019 as a Graduate in Group Compliance and Group Legal. Since then, she has mainly worked with governance and corporate related matters.

“Participating in the talent programme is an enriching experience, allowing me to enhance my skills and personal development with the support of my mentor,” said Beshta. “I agree. The programme is a great opportunity for professional growth and knowledge sharing, but also to get to know our colleagues in other teams and countries”, added Mikaela.

In their blog Beshta and Mikaela share their experience of the programme and their key take-aways so far:

Beshta works mainly with legal issues related to financial crime prevention and data privacy. Beshta is a graduate from Queen Mary University of London and has worked for Nordea since 2019.

Beshta: Hi Mikaela, what was your personal take-away from our first physical T.A.P in Stockholm?

Mikaela: Hi Beshta, I really appreciated meeting all the participants from different teams and countries as well as everyone’s willingness to contribute and make the most of the days in Stockholm. The feeling was that people were truly excited and curios about the T.A.P sessions. What really stayed with me was the focus on our personal strengths, that was a personal game changer. How about you Beshta, how did you feel walking into the first session?

Beshta: I felt a buzz of excitement. I was looking forward to meeting the other participants and dive
into discussions about our individual personality test results. Also, the chance to go through dilemmas regarding fraud matters and explore thought leadership was super interesting. We had some fantastic speakers who brought so much insight to the table. It was a terrific way to kick things off and set the stage for what is to come! Speaking of fraud, did you learn something about it that you did not expect?

Mikaela: Definitely, I was so impressed by the level of complexity that lies behind combating fraud. It is a global issue being fought at all angles. But mostly it made me proud of all the people at Nordea working against fraud with such commitment and focus, the bad guys will not win! What about you, did you have any “aha” moments during the session?

At Nordea since 2019, Mikaela has mainly worked with governance and corporate law matters. Mikaela is a graduate from Uppsala University in Sweden.

Beshta: Absolutely, I had two “aha” moments! First, I discovered my true strengths (the work never ends, right...) and how I can really lean into them – quite exciting to dive deeper into this throughout the programme. The second moment hit when I realized just how much advocacy Nordea is doing to combat fraud, from being on TV to hosting various seminars. It is inspiring to see all that passion in action! What was your favourite moment from these days?

Mikaela: As we did the personality test assessment prior to the T.A.P days, I learnt that one of my strongest skills is empathy. I was not sure if I would be brave enough to share that with a room full of ambitious people, but within the first hour of the T.A.P day, I immediately found two more participants that also had empathy among their top-five skill. This was such a validating and inspiring moment for me and a great reminder that there are many ways to be successful, don’t be afraid to lean in and use your skills! What are you looking forward to with the next T.A.P session?

Beshta: The next session is all about ESG and more specifically how Group Legal fits into the picture. I am excited about the discussions ahead - to learn new insights as it is not only a timely topic but also an important one. I am sure we will again have a lively and engaging conversation!

Mikaela: I agree! I also look forward to our next physical session in Helsinki where we will learn what work will look like in the future, even if it is during one of the coldest months in Helsinki. I can't wait to meet everyone again!

Learning and development is an important part of life at Nordea. For the third consecutive year Nordea’s Group Legal is running the Talent Accelerator Programme (T.A.P.) for selected high performers from across Group Legal. During the 12 month programme participants meet eight times for virtual and in-person group sessions to enhance their professional competence and strengthen mental resilience as Nordea employees. To deepen the learning experience and personal development, participants are also matched with a dedicated personal mentor whom they work with during the year. The third cycle of the TAP programme started in June 2024 and runs until June 2025.
