Check out this blog by our award-winning graduate, Arttu, and hear about his experiences with us in LC&I – and about 'greenwashing' in his “excellent Master’s thesis”

By Arttu Leinonen (26), graduate in LC&I

I live in Helsinki, Finland. I graduated in July 2022 from Aalto University School of Business with finance major and business law minor, and I hold a M.Sc. degree in Economics and Business Administration. I joined Nordea as a graduate in Large Corporates & Institutions (LC&I) in September 2022.

Graduate position in LC&I - an exceptional opportunity

In my final year of studies I wasn’t fully sure what I wanted to do after finishing my studies. After careful consideration, my conclusion was that banking is the field which fascinates me the most and best matches my interests. When I saw the advertisement of the graduate programme within Nordea, the leading bank in the Nordics, I just knew that this would be an exceptional opportunity to experience different positions and gain a steep learning curve within the field that I’m really passionate about. It would also be a great way to explore which area within banking I’d like to start my career in, and which topics interests me the most.

Beneficial rotation structure and insightful tasks

So far, I have joined two different teams; my ‘home team’, LC&I Apps & Analytics, and my first rotation team, LC&I Commercial Services. I spent my my first seven months in LC&I Apps & Analytics, where my work was mostly related to application management within the LC&I business area. I have, among others, been involved in a group wide Identity & Access Management related project as one of the LC&I representatives. I’ve worked with toxic access combination controls – as well as other tasks relating to the overall LC&I application landscape, and supporting in diverse application projects and tasks.

Since April, I have been in rotation at LC&I Commercial Services team, which consists of two sub-teams: Efficiency & Digitalisation and C&I Investor Services. Here, I’ve worked on projects and initiatives focusing on enabling and enhancing service and operational excellence, and also supported in a couple initiatives on the corporate & institutional custody side.

To sum up, so far my work has entailed different types of internal projects; a lot of meetings and (internal) stakeholder management, driver role in an initiative, conducting analysis, preparing material, solving ad hoc issues and much more.

Supportive and inclusive learning environment

My experience is that graduates are considered as equal team members with responsibility. The responsibility you get is well balanced and allocated on the basis of own desire and capabilities, as well as your manager’s assessment on whether the given task would be suitable for you. There are also a lot of helpful senior people to turn to for support and guidance when needed.

The amount of responsibility varies from project to project, and in some cases my involvement has been more about learning than actual contributing. I see this as a purely positive thing, as the setup enables and encourages you to grow and learn new things without the risk of increasing the workload excessively.

Graduate life – learnings, challenges and rewards

As a graduate, there is a lot of interesting stuff going on in the bank that you can get involved in. One challenge for me, which is a valuable learning, is that sometimes it has been hard to say no to join new initiatives and tasks in order to keep workload manageable. So far, I’ve managed quite well to keep a well-balanced workload, but it has for sure meant some difficult decision makings of saying no to partake in interesting projects.

The most rewarding of working here as a graduate is to meet a lot of different people with diverse backgrounds and from different areas across the bank. Working with diverse groups of people has enabled me to increase my own knowledge and skillset, and also learned me to widen my scope with different perspectives on topics, trends, issues, solutions and what not.

Great team spirit – great social gatherings

The team spirit and atmosphere within both teams I have been part of have been great from day one. The working environment and the people here are positive and supportive, and it’s easy to collaborate with others. It has been really nice to see just how friendly, talented, professional, motivated, and easy-going people are in this working community in LC&I.

We – the graduates – also enjoy social gatherings both with our team and together with fellow graduates. E.g. my ‘home team’ had a physical team day last autumn in Helsinki, and similar was organized by my current rotation team in Copenhagen this September. There have also been social events for people located at the Finnish trading floor.

Together with my fellow graduates, we also had two locally held social events during the first half of this year, a couple of unofficial graduate lunches, and a physical boot-camp for all the graduates, which we will have again next spring. The social gatherings have been really great. It is great to meet-up and get-to-know colleagues and fellow graduates, and to network, chitchat and share knowledge in informal settings.

An ideal way to kickstart a career within banking

If asked if I would recommend the Nordea graduate programme, it’s a big YES. I would definitely recommend it. I’ve had, and have, a valuable experience as graduate in LC&I. It provides an exceptional way to learn and try out different things, meet people and network. I think it’s an ideal way to kick-start a career within banking.

So, I encourage anyone who’s considering to apply for the Nordea Graduate programme, to just do it – apply! It’s a great experience.

Learn about Arttu’s highly topical master’s thesis, “GREENWASHING CORPORATE GREEN BONDS: Evidence from European and North American markets” - for which Arttu received a scholarship of EUR 5,000 from the Finnish Foundation for Securities Markets Promotion for an "excellent master's thesis " (click to read news piece). Motivation: Green financing is something that interests me, and together with my advisor, we tried to find a new, interesting angle into the topic. As the amount of issued green bonds is constantly increasing, it provided an interesting opportunity to examine green bonds’ role for firms’ green transition, and whether issued green bonds signal companies greater environmental commitment.

My thesis in short: In my thesis, I study underlying issuance motivations and environmental impact of corporate green bonds. More specifically, I’ll quantitatively analyse:

  • whether recent environmental controversies increase likelihood of green bond issuance within next couple years.
  • whether issued corporate green bond is expected to lead issuing firm to outperform peers on different environmental performance metrics.
  • whether firms that have issued green bonds have statistically higher expectations of reporting on new environmental investment initiatives compared to their peers.

In addition, I also had a more detailed look e.g., into green bonds’ “use of proceeds” characteristic/feature and green bond issuance’s impact on corporate governance.

To sum up, the idea of the thesis is to quantitatively investigate whether corporate green bonds are signaling issuer’s greater commitment on environment, and whether issued corporate green bonds are expected to cause a significant and positive impact on issuer’s environmental performance compared to peers.

Conclusion:  In short, my research highlights the need to increase the transparency of green financing and to define unambiguous criteria for this, so we can ensure that funding is targeted at environmentally positive projects and avoid greenwashing. I do argue that corporate green bonds have great potential on enabling green transition, but there is still work to do, e.g. on environmental data, metrics, monitoring, etc., so that we can fully ensure that desired environmental impact of these products is achieved.
