(DK #1) It’s been some years since we had summer interns at our Markets LC&I trading floor in Copenhagen. Now, finally, we’re thrilled to re-introduce our summer internship programme in Denmark, and very happy and excited to welcome six talented interns, and introduce them to you.
In this, their first blog, you’ll meet Emma, Christian and Timothy telling about their background, their motivation to apply and how the first week has been.
I study master´s degree in Finance & Investments at Copenhagen Business School.
Why did you apply for the summer internship?
I got an e-mail from Nordea Career, because I previously signed up for job notifications (I can recommend people to do that). The headline immediately caught my attention and I sent my application the same evening I received the e-mail.
I applied to pursue the opportunity to follow Nordea Markets and their work intensively over the summer, and it seemed like a good chance to learn about how a trading floor operates. Also, I wanted to learn more about the tasks and challenges that the employees of Nordea Markets face in their everyday job.
What do you expect to achieve, learn from the internship?
I hope to get more practical experience in working with the financial markets, and to get a scope of how a big financial institution like Nordea acts in the market. Also, I hope to find out if this could be a career path for me when I am done with my studies.
What do you look forward to the most?
To meet all the knowledgeable people in Markets and see what a typical day consists of. From my studies, I know the financial markets from a more theoretical perspective, so it will be interesting to see how the “real life” of a Markets department is.
What’s the first week been like – what have you been doing?
It's been fun - but I have not been doing a lot of work here, yet. Primarily, the first week went with meeting the team, setting up all IT systems and learning more about the organization in Nordea Markets, and hear about what each team is specified in. Everyone here is so nice to help and answer all kinds of questions. I have been reading about the background of what the team I am in, is working with. I am looking forward to share more about the internship. I'll be back!
I am currently on my last semester at my masters degree in Economics at University of Copenhagen where I specialize in finance.
Why did you apply for a summer internship with Nordea Markets?
I am very curious by nature, and as my knowledge about what it is like to work in markets is quite limited, I thought it was a great opportunity to explore how working at the trading floor is like and what kind of different jobs that exists within markets. Also, to be able to sit on the largest trading floor in Scandinavia learning from a lot of smart people, for a two month period before I graduate, was an opportunity I could not miss!
What do you expect to achieve, learn?
I expect to gain a lot of knowledge of how markets work, both from the sales perspective and trading perspective, and what the different opportunities are within markets. Further, I expect to develop my technical skills and to finish my internship as a better analyst.
What’s the first week been like – what have you been doing?
In my team at FX Sales and Derivatives, I started my internship within the area of Research and Sales. My first task was within Sales was to pitch a trading idea. After that, I started to help Sales with an overview of our clients' different FX exposure, and then building a model that could tell us something about the hedging degree of the different clients.
To find out what life is all about in the biggest bank in the Nordics and what goes on at the trading floor.
How did you hear about it – what caught your interest?
I’ve been regularly looking at the Nordea career page to find opportunities that were relevant post-graduation. I didn’t know anything about the internship beforehand but thought that it sounded like a risk-free way to try Nordea. The fact that the role involves both knowledge of the macroeconomy as well as understanding of the financial markets intrigued me.
What do you expect to achieve?
I expect to get a better understanding of the financial markets which I can leverage for better opportunities after graduation. More specifically, I am excited to learn a lot about the risks that regular companies face regarding FX and interest rates.
What’s the first week been like – what have you been doing?
It has been great to learn so much about the business by looking over the shoulder of lots of knowledgeable people in different areas like sales, research, and trading in the FX space. I have specifically been researching the macroeconomic tendencies in Poland and Japan which I have found quite interesting.
