We spent a very fun week with Credit & Rates, Sales and Trading. Government bonds, mortgage bonds, treasury bills and corporate bonds were some of the instrument, we learned about during the week. We started off with a market update by the Markets Chief Analyst, Mats Hydén, in Fixed Income Strategy.
We then our case for the week; to construct a portfolio consisting of fixed income products suitable for a long term investor. Except for the case work, we got the opportunity to sit down and talk with each and every one on both the sales and trading side.
Good talks over lunch with colleagues.
With a lot of new knowledge buzzing in our heads, we took our laptops and walked across the trading floor to Fixed Income & Securities Advisory. This desk is part of Wealth Management and their task is to advise wealthy individuals and smaller companies on their bond and/or equity portfolio.
Each morning kicked off with an early equity research meeting, followed by a macro update, and finished with a credit sales meeting. On the Wednesday, we were invited to an after- work with drinks and good conversations. We had a great afternoon/evening.
Our case for the week was to advise a client on their bond and equity portfolio to optimize risk adjusted return. So, we got the opportunity to meet two strategists at Nordea Markets, Mikael Sarwe, Head of Strategy and Research Sweden, and Martin Björsell, Senior Analyst - and to absorb more interesting and valuable knowledge. As usual, the week ended with the case presentation. It went very well and the team was very impressed. So we were very happy 😊.
Now we’ve come to our last week ☹. Last but not least, we rotated and joined the Risk Solution team. This team we already knew, since we worked with them during our first week – and it was great to see them again. Risk Solution specialises in detecting and handling currency and interest rate risks.
This week’s case was one of the trickier ones, but with their expertise and great help we managed to crack the case. On Thursday, we took the elevator up to the 6th floor, and met with Anita and Cecilia at Treasury & ALM, Funding.
Last but not least, like the other day, we were in for another nice surprise!
We got invited to a goodbye-after-work drink with the entire trading floor. What a nice gesture, and what a really great evening. Big thank you to Anton in the FX team for planning it all!
To wrap-up, our summer as interns at the Nordea trading floor in Stockholm has been very interesting and intense, in a good way. The weeks have just flown by, and we are sad to leave.
We want to thank each team, and each and every one we’ve met for the warm welcome and for sharing their knowledge, coaching and supporting us throughout the internship - and thank you Nordea for this opportunity. We hope to be back soon.
Goodbye for now,
From Filippa, Tilde and Petter
"Thank you, Tilde, Petter and Filippa," says Anders Sand, Head of FX Sales Sweden, Nordea Markets, adding:
“It’s been a pleasure having you with us during this summer and you have truly impressed us all. I’m very glad to hear that you’ve enjoyed your time as summer interns; learned a lot and had good fun too.
For us, having summer interns, not only means that we get a chance to meet talented students but it also allows us to gain valuable insights to what the next generation looks for in an employer and work place. As well as giving us perspective on how we conduct our daily business. It is also a great opportunity for our current employees to gain mentoring experience, so we are always on the lookout for talents like you! Good bye for now - who knows, perhaps you’ll be back!
Well, in fact - Petter is actually staying with us. Petter has now joined my team in FX Sales in a student position. Welcome back, Petter - we're glad to have you on board."
