Karl Emil Thulstrup (25)

Master’s in Applied Economics and Finance at CBS. After joining Nordea Markets first as summer intern, then as graduate in Markets, Karl Emil works as analyst at the Structured Credit Trading desk in Nordea Markets.

My current job in Structured Credit Trading

In my current job as analyst, I am part of a unique trading desk within the world of credit derivatives such as credit default swaps. Prior to joining the desk, I had essentially only worked with equities, so there has truly been a lot to learn, although, I am certain that is true for every role.

I find my job here extremely interesting and challenging due to the uniqueness and complexity of the instruments and products, and due to the many different aspects to take into account. While the products themselves are niche, one still has to follow idiosyncratic events, macroeconomics, equities, rates, international relations, elections, etc. to properly understand market movements and establish a view. One of my favourite aspects about working in financial markets, is that there are so many unpredictable factors in play with limited information, and how the market moves can be interpreted as future expectations of market participants until something is realized. The responsibilities are also diverse, ranging from market-making, risk management, positioning, to quantitative analysis, which I also value highly.

My internship provided unique opportunities - professionally and socially

When I first joined Nordea for the Summer Internship programme in 2022, I worked as a business analyst in Markets Business Technology, focusing on system integration for the e-FX part of Nordea Markets. During the internship, I was included in the team from early on and trusted with responsibility on projects that I both could learn from and that I believe provided value.

Apart from the daily tasks, the internship provided valuable insights into various roles on the trading floor such as trading, sales, and quant modelling. I think these two aspects made the internship so great – it did not only offer the experience of trying out a role, but it also provided unique access to truly see what the many opportunities offered by Nordea entail. Having mentioned the professional aspects, I also have to emphasize the great social life and networking opportunities the internship provides. Nordea Markets is full of great people.

I sincerely encourage you to apply - a student position elsewhere shouldn't be a hindrance

From my experience, I would sincerely encourage you to apply for the Summer Internship in Markets. Even if the role turns out not to perfectly match your interests, the internship provides the unique opportunity to gain insight into roles that you may not yet know (even existed) or fully understand. It is a firm opinion of mine that you have little to no clue what a job entails until you see it firsthand. This is a great way to gain insight – and learn from the best.

If you already have a student position somewhere else, I am certain that your manager will support your curiosity in exploring your interests at this stage of your studies. During my internship, I took a leave of absence from my then job (as a portfolio manager at a Danish investment management company), did the internship at Nordea, and returned to my other role.

Inspired by my knowledge and experiences from my internship at Markets, I rejoined Nordea Markets one year later in a role I appreciate a lot. Had I not participated in the Markets Summer Internship programme, I would not have had the same insights and clarity about what role would be the best fit for me.

My advice to students interested in the summer internship ...

I recommend you to be curious and think about what interests you the most, and try to direct your application toward that. Obviously, the internship is partially for you to figure out what you want to do – for you to establish an idea. If you get the position, then do your best to get around on the trading floor and talk to people in various roles. People here are open and happy to tell about their job – this is truly an additional but highly valuable benefit of the programme. Best of luck with your application – drop by my desk if you make it!

Emma Kringelbach (27)

Cand.polit. Currently in a graduate position as Analyst in Markets FX Sales.

My current job as analyst in FX Sales

In my position as analyst in FX Sales, I work with business banking clients who need advisory within FX risk and/or automating liquidity management across currencies. The needs of business banking clients vary a lot which challenges both my professional and interpersonal skills. Some days, I have meetings with a sophisticated financial team in a company, and other days, I have meetings with founders that run almost all the business alone. I love the diversity of my role.

My responsibility can be divided into two main categories: Internal and external. My responsibility internally is to support our relationships managers hence always be present and available for a chat about clients’ needs or other questions. Further, we prioritize to use some time to develop the skillset of the relationship managers, so we can optimize our collaboration. I spend two days a week in local branches with the relationship managers to strengthen our cooperation.

Externally, my responsibilities are to advise our clients in the best way possible. This means, I cover and clarify a client’s specific needs together with the client, and make sure we cover everything FX related. This can be to mitigate FX risks and/or automise their liquidity management properly, enabling the customer to use their valuable time on their business and not on their bank accounts.

The social and work life is well balanced here. Some days are really busy with customer meetings, and other days, I have more time to deep dive into customer data and analysis. My work varies a lot, and no days are the same, which for me is really fantastic.

My internship made it a great summer

The best thing about the internship was to get to know a lot of people in Markets during the summer. Especially my own team which is quite large and almost everyone have their own specific role. Luckily, I am very curious as a person, which is well received and encouraged in Markets. Everyone here are happy to share their experiences, tell great stories from back in the days, and are also eager to learn you a thing or two. Moreover, the socialising among us interns was highly prioritized by Nordea Markets. Hence, we had a great summer where we got to meet up during and after work on various occasions and went out together for nice dinners and so on, all of it arranged by the Markets coordinator, Simon.

I'm a huge fan of my internship in Markets - you should apply to ...?

If you are curious to see if working on a trading floor is for you, you should definitely apply for the internship. It’s a great way for you to see for yourself if there is any role you find interesting and think could be fun to try out. I am a huge fan of my internship in Markets, as it gave me full clarity of how my position would turn out after I graduated, and during that summer I also quickly got a large network within Markets.

Personal attributes that could be an advantage

A personal trait that I know my colleagues appreciated in my case, was my curiosity. It does not matter if you are the most clever person in the room – because it is highly likely that you are not – but if people can see and feel you are eager to learn, they will prioritise their time to teach you whatever skill you think would be nice to learn from them.

My advice to you considering to apply

My best advice: Don’t be shy, just apply!

Regarding the application: Show why you are interested. It’s cool with merits from prior work, but tell us why you want an internship in Markets. This does not mean, that you have to have followed the stock market since you were six years old, or read our morning report every morning (even though it’s a good one). My own motivation was that I was enormously curious to see what a job in Markets could look like – learn about the diverse opportunities – as my knowledge was quite limited i.e. I would like to find out if Markets was a place for me.

Interview: Be yourself and ask questions about the various roles to help you figure out if this would be something great to spend two months doing during summer.

During the internship: Enjoy your time and prioritise speaking with as many people as possible, not just on the trading floor but across the bank – don’t be shy. Final word; apply 😉.

Christoffer A. Brevadt (25)

Mathematics-Economics at the University of Copenhagen. Currently in a graduate position as FX Business Analyst in Markets Business Technology.

My current job in Business Technology

As graduate in my current job as FX Business Analyst in Markets Business Technology, I create and design IT solutions for the infrastructure behind all the FX trades, we make in the bank. This requires a lot of collaboration with all the stakeholders on the trading floor (FX Sales, FX Spot traders, FX Swap traders, Operations and Developers).

My internship brought valuable learnings and development - and good fun

During my summer internship, I worked as Quant developer in Markets Business Technology. I enjoyed feeling included in the team from day one, and that you as intern quickly on got the opportunity to take ownership of challenging tasks and provide value to the team. Also, the social aspect of being an intern here was really great, as there was a lot of social gatherings and after work events planned for us interns. So, on top of the valuable learning and personal development, I had really good fun as well, with the fellow interns and my team mates.

I recommend students to apply - it's a unique opportunity ...

I would definitely recommend students to apply. It is a good way to enter such a large bank like Nordea – the largest in the Nordics – and it is an unique opportunity to experience working on a vibrant trading floor together with highly skilled people, passionate about their work, and happy to share their knowledge. My summer internship was a great experience which has taken me to where I am today, in a graduate position as FX business analyst. There are so many career opportunities here. I’d say go for it, apply.

Being open minded and positive

It is important to have a positive and open mindset if you choose to apply for the summer internship. It is a steep learning curve where tasks differ from the theoretical tasks you usually do at the university.

My best piece of advice to students considering an internship with us

During your internship, soak up as much information as possible, and don’t be scared to ask your colleagues questions, ask for help or advice. Remember, there is no such thing as a stupid question. Show interest, be curious and you will have a great summer at the Markets trading floor.  Apply ;-).

Hopefully, the blog by the three former summer interns gave you insight and inspiration to make a move - and apply for the Markets Summer Internship 2024.

Apply no later than 7th April 2024 - just click.
