12-07-2024 13:05

(NO #1) Some spend their summer chilling in a hammock and hanging out with mates. Not these talented students – they’re enjoying the summer making new friends and exploring the world of finance, learning the trades of shipping, credit analysis, trading, derivatives, macro research and much more. We’re happy to introduce you to the six interns who have joined our Markets summer internship at Nordea in Oslo.

First up are; Sara, Henriette and Anders. Read their first blog in a series and hear about their expectations and experiences, so far, solving real-life cases, beating challenges and having a great time with fellow interns and Markets colleagues.

Sara Holten (25)

I have one year left of my Master´s degree in industrial economics and technology management with a specialisation in artificial intelligence and finance. I am also doing a bachelor’s degree in economics. Both degrees are at NTNU, Trondheim.

I see the summer internship at Nordea Markets as a great opportunity to learn and experience work in several departments. Since Nordea is the largest bank in the Nordics, I see this as a great place to start a carrier, with multiple opportunities to learn new skills at a fast pace and get insight to the many career opportunities the bank offers.

Throughout the summer, us six interns will take part in four different projects, enabling us to test our skills in practice, gain new skills and discover new interests. I look forward to learn about the different departments and teams, as well as get the opportunity to get to know and learn from these experienced and highly knowledgeable people. I also look forward to spending time with the other interns.

Already learnt a great deal – challenging tasks and good fun

So far, I have worked in international shipping the first two weeks, and also been introduced to other departments, such as the Large Corporates & Institution Norway division, the Rates trading & derivatives teams, Wealth Management and the Macro Research team.

My fellow intern, Henriette, and I have been working in international shipping on a credit analysis project in order to learn more about the industry and potentially pitch a loan proposal for a shipping company. We finished the project with a presentation for the team. I did not have any past experience in shipping, and have learnt a great deal about credit analysis, key financial terms, where to look for information specific to the company, and also more about the shipping industry in general. It has been challenging but the team has been very supportive and provided valuable help and support when needed. As of social activities, we have had dinner at the office with LC&I, and also joined a summer dinner with Markets people.

We have also had the weekly Summer Academy lessons with various LC&I experts from Markets Trading / Derivatives and the Macro team and from Wealth Management. After the lessons, we have gone for dinner and drinks with the other interns and graduates, and the other day we went out to play shuffleboard and dart which was very fun.

The first week have been intense but really great. One thing that probably has surprised a bit, is how truly nice and welcoming everyone here are. It has been easy to ask Markets people for help whenever needed, and the all the colleagues are happy to spend time with us explaining concepts and terms I am unfamiliar with. It’s all much better than I could imagine.

Henriette Johannessen Drougge (23)

I have a bachelor’s degree in finance from BI Norwegian Business School. I am currently studying at Copenhagen Business School, where I have one year left of my MSc in Finance and Investments.

I applied to the summer internship at Nordea Markets, because Nordea is the largest bank in the Nordics with a good reputation, and the summer internship has a likewise good reputation for a steep learning curve. Also, during the internship you rotate between desks which means you get to work in different business areas and gain insight to several future work possibilities.

During the first two weeks, I’ve been working in the international shipping team in Large Corporates & Institutions (LC&I), on a project that involved a credit analysis, which we presented for the international shipping team. It was a very educational project, where we learned a lot about the shipping industry and how to evaluate a company based on credit risk.

It was kind of challenging because I did not have much experience or knowledge about the shipping industry nor how to do a credit analysis, but we had great help from the team, so it went very well.

I also enjoy weekly Summer Academy, arranged for us interns. We learn a lot about the different areas of the bank, and there’s always some fun, social activities afterwards.

Looking back at our first weeks here, I am very surprised how much we have learned and experienced in just two weeks. The people here have been so nice and willing to help with everything, so that we get the best experience. It is for sure great.

Anders Tørnby (25)

I recently completed my Master’s degree at Copenhagen Business School, in Economics & Business Administration – Finance and Investments. During my studies I worked part time at Nykredit in Corporate Analysis.

I joined the Nordea Markets summer internship, because it is a unique opportunity to get insight to a lot of different aspects within LC&I and Markets. The rotation aspect is quite unique and a great chance to gain diverse new experiences.

Everyone here are extremely knowledgeable of their field. Consequently, being able to work with them is a great learning opportunity. The first two weeks have been high-pace and a lot of fun. We have been introduced to many teams. All the people we have met are very welcoming, and we are encouraged to ask questions and reach to different teams and talk to everyone.

During these two weeks, I have been working on a Currency Risk Analysis in the Risk Solutions team, which I later on presented for the team. Then there is the weekly Summer Academy meetings, where we also get a more in-depth introduction to the various different teams and hear how they work and which teams they interact with the most.

It's all been very educational. I think what has surprised me the most – positively – has been the projects we are tasked with. The real-world constraints often ignored in academia are now regarded to a much greater extent.
