Nordea is set to become the first Nordic bank to join the Swift payments scheme as a Gateway Intermediary, and one of the first 70+ banks globally to do so.

The initiative supports the G20 ambition for improved cross-border payments, establishing common rules and service levels that deliver faster, more predictable and more transparent payment experiences for consumers and businesses.

Raising the bar for cross-border payments

By joining the scheme, we reinforce our role as the gateway to the Nordics and our commitment to leveraging our Nordic scale in service of financial institutions worldwide. In the initial phase, Nordea will support scheme-compliant book transfers to Denmark and Norway in line with Swift payment scheme rules, with plans to expand the scope over time.

“Customers are increasingly looking for a seamless cross-border payment experience. The Swift payments scheme supports that ambition. As the gateway to the Nordics, we are strengthening our commercial offering and using our Nordic scale to enhance the payment experience for customers and financial institutions across borders,” says Kirsi Wiitala, Head of Transaction Banking at Nordea.

What is the Swift payments scheme?

The Swift payment scheme is designed to improve the cross-border payment experience by promoting consistent standards across participating banks. By establishing shared rules and service levels, the scheme reduces friction and enhances the end-to-end payment experience, making cross-border payments more reliable and efficient for all parties involved.
