Educational, eventful and super exciting first week of the internship – See why

18-07-2023 14:42

(NO #1) Summer time! For many, that means checking out from work or school - go on vacation and perhaps do some island hopping or hammock chilling. Not these young talents you’re about to meet. They’ve checked in to our trading floor in Oslo, and got front-row seats to the goings-on in the world of finance. Ole Martin, Mina and Sondre are busy and excited to do some ‘desk hopping’, learn from the best and kick-start their career.

One week into the internship they’re already in full swing gaining hands-on experience from working with real life projects, digging into credit risk analyses, passing compliance courses not to mention the various social events like floor ball, they’re attending, and very much enjoying it all, if you ask them. We’ve asked - let's see what the three interns say.

Ole Martin Bø (24)

I am doing a MSc in Finance at BI Oslo, (BI Norwegian Business School) and recently finished my 4th year.

Why  did you apply for a summer internship with Nordea Markets?

I found out about the internship via the career portal at BI. What caught my interest was the rotation program offered, as it allows us to get an insight into several departments and fields. I have been unsure about which direction I want to take within finance, and therefore the Nordea Markets internship suited me perfectly.

Looking forward to hands-on experience and socialising

My expectation is to learn a lot about the different areas, and get some hands-on experience – different from the theoretical we’re taught at school. Furthermore, I want to use this opportunity to learn from the great professionals at Nordea, and get as much input as possible.

I expect all the projects will be exciting, although sitting at the trading desk will be interesting. In addition, I look forward to all the social happenings with other interns and colleagues. We also have “mandatory” Floorball on Tuesdays, where the competitiveness will be tested (I’m told 😉).

Super exciting first week

The first week has been super exciting. I have enjoyed my first week at LC&I (Large Corporates and Institutions) together with my fellow intern, Sania, where we have been working on some live projects. We have been introduced to several people, all wanting to tell us about what they do. It has been educational and a great experience.

Mina Linnestad (23)

I recently finished my 4th year at NHH Norwegian School of Economics, majoring in Financial Economics. Previously, I have worked for a tech scale-up, and I am also the Head of Financial Affairs in The Executive Board of The Student Association of the Norwegian School of Economics.

Why  did you apply for a summer internship with Nordea LC&I/Markets?

I was curious to learn more about finance in practice, and was thrilled to see that Nordea offered a rotating program with the possibility to gain insight to different divisions. This seemed very unique and will hopefully provide a better understanding of the whole value chain of the bank. After reading more about this and also the Summer Academy I simply could not let the opportunity pass.

Challenges and deeper understanding

I expect to be challenged and gain a deeper understanding of the different divisions and positions in the bank. When I attended the Nordea Women’s Finance Insight Programme this spring, I met various people from the LC&I division, and got the impression that the employees are open-minded and talented. So, I will use the internship as an opportunity to be curious and ask questions. After the summer, I will hopefully figure out if I would like to pursue a career within finance.

For now, during my summer internship, I will be working on projects within DCM (Debt Capital Markets), Corporate Finance, Equity Sales and Research and LC&I (Large Corporates & Institutions). I am super excited about all the projects, as well as the Summer Academy. It is also valuable to connect with interns with different study backgrounds.

Busy first week

My first week passed by so quickly! Firstly, we did a lot of onboarding activities including setting up equipment and take courses in compliance. Tom Olav and I have worked on a project for DCM, and will do a credit risk analysis for two companies which we will present in the upcoming week.

Sondre Snersrud (23)

I recently finished my 4th year at NHH, majoring in Finance. Previously I've been working in the SpareBank 1 group and Askeladden & Co.

Why  did you apply for our summer internship?

I heard about the internship through the Career Fair at NHH and from previous interns. The rotation program definitely caught my interest as a unique opportunity to explore the difference areas within finance and the bank. Being introduced to the different value chains within financial markets and the banking industry seemed extremely valuable and rare. Especially over only a summer.

Expecting lots of learning and lasting network

I expect to get lots of learnings and hands-on experiences from the internship. I also hope to develop a lasting network of colleagues and friends. Most importantly, however, I hope to gain a better understanding of my future career track within finance, given the vast career diversity with many interesting specialist fields and tracks.

Whilst all projects seems interesting, I am especially looking forward to working in IBD (Investment Banking Division) where I, hopefully, get exposure to interesting transactions, clients and professionals. Lastly I have to highlight the weekly Summer Academy events.

Eventful first week

It’s been an eventful first week. It’s been a great combination of working on projects, attending seminars and social events. The people we’ve met have been very welcoming. We have also already gained relevant experiences from some of the real life projects we have been working on.

Stay tuned for the upcoming blog featuring their fellow summer interns at the trading floor in Oslo.
