In this pilot, an AI agent handled both the purchase and the payment based on instructions provided by the consumer. The agent purchased a coffee tasting package on Priceless.com, and the payment was successfully charged to a Nordea Mastercard. Powered by Mastercard Agent Pay, the transaction shows how AI agents can complete purchases on behalf of consumers in a secure, consent-based and verifiable way. PayOS supported the end to end orchestration of the transaction.

The transaction used agentic tokens, ensuring protection of sensitive data and strong consumer verification throughout the process.

“Agentic commerce represents an important evolution in how customers will interact with digital services. As transactions become more autonomous, strong safeguards, customer authorization, transparency and trust are essential. Our collaboration with Mastercard demonstrates how these principles can be embedded responsibly from the outset, while ensuring that the customer remains in control”, says Kirsi Wiitala, Head of Transaction Banking in Nordea.

With this first Agent Pay transaction in Finland we take an important step towards how payments can evolve in a world where AI assistants play an increasingly important role in daily decisions and purchases.

“AI has the potential to simplify how people manage everyday tasks, but trust and security must come first. Agent Pay is designed to ensure AI-initiated transactions are transparent, authenticated and always under the consumer’s control. Enhanced transaction data also gives issuers clear visibility into agent-initiated activity. By working with partners like Nordea, we are helping lay the foundations for trusted, AI-powered commerce”, says Erik Gutwasser, Division President Northern Europe Mastercard.
