Nordea was ranked 83 in the media and research firm’s Global 100 Index, which also put the us among the top six most sustainable banks worldwide – a great acknowledgement of Nordea’s core strategy being translated into actions every day.

Now in its 20th year, the annual ranking quantitatively compares and ranks the world’s largest publicly traded companies based on their impact on people and the planet. For this year’s ranking, Corporate Knights assessed 6,733 companies with more than US$1 billion in revenues.

Toby Heaps, CEO of Corporate Knights, said that what distinguished Global 100 companies from other large organisation is how they “back up their green commitments with their investment dollars”.

He added: “Sustainable investment themes like clean energy are growing exponentially, and the Global 100, across sectors, are helping to drive and are poised to thrive in the low-carbon economy.”

In last year’s Global 100 index, Nordea ranked 94. At Nordea, we play a leading role in helping our customers transition into a sustainable future and are committed to becoming a bank with net zero emissions by 2050

To reach this goal, we have set a mid-term objective to reduce carbon emissions across our investment and lending portfolios by 40-50% by 2030 and also to reduce our carbon emissions in our internal operations by more than 50%.

Based on our experience within active ownership, sustainable investments and financing, we are accelerating our customers' transition through our advisory and offerings.

Corporate Knights ranking

Global 100 companies represent the top echelon in the world on sustainability performance. All publicly-traded companies with over US$1 billion in revenue are assessed across 25 key performance indicators, including % sustainable revenue, % sustainable investment, % taxes paid, carbon productivity, and racial and gender diversity. Only companies making sustainable solutions a core part of their business offerings and allocating meaningful investments to reduce their carbon footprints make the grade. Find the  full 2024 methodology here
