Planting roots for the future: A day in the “Nordea Forest”
What began as a way to celebrate colleagues reaching five years at Nordea has grown into a hands-on initiative that brings people together while supporting a greener future. Each year in Estonia, employees step out of the office and into nature to take part in Tree Planting Day.
Around 30 colleagues gathered just outside Tallinn to spend the day planting trees in the “Nordea Forest”. Guided by a forestry expert who shared insights into sustainable forest management and the life cycle of trees, they quickly got to work.Over the course of a few hours, they planted around 2000 trees.
“It was actually quite hard work physically, but I really enjoyed it. Working in pairs made it easier, and it was great to spend time with colleagues and get to know people you don’t usually work with,” says Merit Baumann from Loan Amendments.
A meaningful way to contribute
The tree-planting initiative is organised in collaboration with a local foundation and reflects a broader commitment to sustainability. Planting new trees helps absorb carbon dioxide and restore natural habitats more quickly, while also highlighting the importance of responsible, long-term forestry.
“We want to recognise colleagues who have been with Nordea for five years while giving them a completely different kind of work day. Being outdoors, staying active and working together creates a strong sense of teamwork while contributing to nature. It’s a simple set-up, but it leaves a lasting impact, and you can really see what you’ve contributed,” explains Kätlin Palmer from Workplace Management Estonia, who organises the day together with team member Sandra Ilves.
From planting trees to strengthening culture
After a day in the forest, colleagues gathered for a well-deserved lunch, sharing food and reflections on the experience.
“It was a fun and meaningful experience. I have a background in gardening and environmental studies, so for me it felt very natural to be out planting trees again,” says Ivi Kuul from Payment Support.
For Tiina Käsi, Country Senior Executive for Nordea in Estonia, the initiative reflects both Nordea’s values and its focus on connecting people and purpose.
“I’m proud to see our colleagues come together around initiatives like Tree Planting Day, giving their time and energy to something meaningful. It not only creates a positive impact for the environment but also helps build a strong and connected culture across Nordea,” she says.
