Update 2026 – Improved handling of Finnish withholding tax for Nordea customers

As of 2026, the handling of Finnish withholding tax has been improved. For Nordea customers, this means that we can now assist all customers in paying the correct tax on dividends from Nordea shares, regardless of whether the shares are held via the Swedish or Finnish market — provided that an Investor Declaration (ISD) has been signed.

What is new from 2026 is that Euroclear Sweden offers Nordea and other market participants in the Swedish market the possibility of a fast refund of excess Finnish withholding tax for shares held in Euroclear. The requirement is that the shares are held in a nominee-registered account and that the customer has signed a valid Investor Declaration (ISD).

Background – Finnish withholding tax on dividends

The Finnish withholding tax legislation entered into force on 1 January 2021. This has an impact on all shareholders resident outside Finland holding Finnish securities in a bank outside Finland. The regulation includes detailed provisions on when tax treaty based withholding rates can be applied to dividends at the payment stage. More details of the new legislation available on the Finnish tax authorities’ website here

Due to the new taxation model and new provision to tax liability there will be limitations to apply relief at source at dividend payments. In the cases where relief at source cannot be applied a 35% maximum tax will be withheld. Over-withheld tax can be reclaimed from the Finnish tax authority after the dividend payment year has ended. Further information of the reclaim process available here

All shareholders are encouraged to obtain information regarding local practises related to the withholding tax regulation from the custodian bank that holds the shares.

• Nordea shares on the Finnish market:
A 15% withholding tax is deducted directly at the time of dividend payment, provided that an ISD has been signed. The ISD is valid for the current year and five years from the date of issuance and does not need to be renewed during its validity period.

• Nordea shares on the Swedish market:
A 35% withholding tax is deducted at the time of dividend payment. Subsequently, 20% is automatically refunded within approximately two months, provided that an ISD has been signed.

For Nordea customers who are private individuals, digital ISD certificates are sent automatically. Corporate customers must contact their advisor in order to sign the declaration.

The result is that all Nordea customers who have signed an ISD pay the correct Finnish tax (15%) on the dividend.

The timing of dividend payments depends on the relevant approval and practical processing by banks and custodians.

• The ordinary dividend for 2025 was paid on 2 April 2026.
• The mid-year dividend in 2026 is expected to be paid on or around 13 August 2026

The exact date when the funds are credited to your account may vary depending on your bank and country.
