At Nordea in Poland, the legal function has evolved from a traditional support role into a strategic capability serving the wider Nordea Group. What began as a four person team has grown into a specialised organisation of nearly twenty professionals working across key legal and governance areas.

The team now brings together expertise across Branch Management Office, Data Privacy, Technology, Sourcing, Regulatory, Anti-Money Laundering, and People and Reward. This set-up enables the legal team to support complex business needs while helping the organisation navigate regulation, contracts, data protection and employment matters in a coordinated way.

Building trust across borders

The mandate to support strategic processes from the Polish branch was earned over time through consistent delivery and trusted collaboration. Lawyers in Poland proactively supported colleagues in other countries, particularly in areas such as technology contracts and personal data protection. By contributing to smaller initiatives first and delivering with quality, timeliness and a collaborative mindset, the team built confidence among internal stakeholders and gradually took on more international and strategic work.

Integrating legal, management and operation

The leadership structure in Poland further reflects this mindset. The Branch Manager role is held by Agnieszka Dzięgielewska-Jończyk, who also serves as General Counsel. This challenges the stereotype of legal teams as a function focused only on identifying risk and slowing change. Instead, it shows how legal expertise can be a strong enabler of modern leadership in a highly regulated industry such as banking.

Adam Chudziński, Iwona Świderek, Tomasz Wojnarowicz and Martyna Smaglińska now received the award for the whole team, for shaping modern and strategic legal function at Nordea. The award is a recognition not only of the team’s achievements, but also of a broader shift in how legal professionals contribute to organisations. At Nordea in Poland, the legal team’s development shows how deep legal competence, operational understanding and business partnership can come together to create long-term value.
