Shiyang Chen joined Nordea six months ago as a backend developer in the FX Business Technology team in Finland, through the Future Finance Professional (FFP) programme. As a recent graduate in software development, this FFP trainee opportunity has been invaluable in helping her bridge the gap between academic learning and real-world application. “It’s been one of the most memorable and rewarding experiences of my life,” Shiyang says. Learn why in this blog by Shiyang Chen.

Strong programming skills and genuine curiosity

Hi, I'm Shiyang. My primary role is a backend developer in the e-FX (electronic Foreign Exchange) team at Nordea Markets where we design, implement, and maintain robust FX trading systems. The work involves a wide range of technical challenges, which make every week interesting. What makes this role especially exciting is that it goes beyond pure technology.

To succeed in this role requires not only strong programming skills, but also genuine curiosity about FX markets and trading mechanisms. My colleagues have been incredibly supportive in helping me gain more financial knowledge.

One of the most exciting developments in our team is our ongoing exploration of AI to improve productivity. We're experimenting with AI-driven ways of working, and learning where the industry is heading.

Embracing global collaboration

My team works across Helsinki and Copenhagen, which gives my day-to-day work a truly international dimension. Since many of my stakeholders are based in Copenhagen, I have learned to communicate with precision, align expectations early, and keep progress visible through asynchronous updates.

Collaborating across locations has also helped me appreciate different perspectives and working styles. It reminds me that great technology is built through trust, clarity, and teamwork across borders.

Vibrant FFP community

The FFP programme has been transformative, both professionally and personally. Beyond technical mentorship, the program creates a vibrant community of talented students and graduates joining Nordea from diverse backgrounds. We've had many team-building events and networking sessions that have accelerated our integration into the company culture.

Our dedicated FFP Fun Managers deserve special credit – they've gone above and beyond to help us feel welcome and connected. These experiences have made the transition from student life to corporate life much smoother.

Challenging technical work and supportive colleagues

Looking back on this period, I can confidently say it has been one of the most memorable and rewarding experiences of my life. The combination of challenging technical work, supportive colleagues, international exposure, and a well-structured trainee programme has set the stage for a fulfilling career at Nordea.

It has been one of the most memorable and rewarding experiences of my life.

I'm excited about what lies ahead and grateful for this opportunity to grow both as a developer and as a professional in the fintech industry.
