Domestic abuse—whether through physical violence, psychological torment, financial control, isolation, or other forms of coercion—remains alarmingly prevalent, even in Western societies. Estonia is no exception. Surveys show that 41% of women and 33% of men have experienced violence within an intimate relationship at some point in their lives.

Tiina Käsi, Country Senior Executive of Nordea Estonia

At Nordea, safeguarding human rights and creating positive change in the societies we serve are core values. That’s why we are proud to join the Employers Against Domestic Abuse initiative, launched by the Kaljulaid Foundation.

“Domestic abuse is a serious issue that directly impacts both employees and employers, even though incidents often occur outside the workplace. It can affect an employee’s mental and physical well-being, leading to reduced motivation, performance, creativity, and commitment,” says Tiina Käsi, Country Senior Executive of Nordea Estonia, and continues:

“As a workplace we have a unique opportunity—and responsibility—to help prevent and reduce domestic abuse. By joining this initiative, we’re not only raising awareness but also creating a culture where employees feel safe, supported, and empowered to seek help when they need it.”

Knowing the signs – training for leaders and employees

As part of the partnership, all leaders and employees have been invited to training sessions designed to deepen understanding of domestic abuse. These sessions included real-life case studies to illustrate the complexity of abuse and equip participants with practical tools and guidance to respond effectively.

Jaana Pedras, People Consultant in Estonia

“The training was highly valuable and informative. It helped participants learn to recognise different forms of abuse, including those that are less visible, through real-life stories,” says Jaana Pedras, People Consultant in Estonia, who has been actively involved in coordinating and implementing the partnership, and continues:

“Almost everyone knows someone who has either experienced abuse or knows someone affected. When we all understand the early signs, how to respond, and how to take action, we can make a difference. With the right support, individuals can find the courage to speak up when something is wrong – and together, we can work towards preventing domestic abuse.”
